The Avalon Chapter of the Council of Canadians supports the legal challenge against the federal government for their approval of the Bay du Nord offshore oil project.
We are holding our federal government to account for facilitating the increased production of fossil fuels which is endangering our planet. Increased carbon emissions downstream of this project are still Canada’s global responsibility.
We are holding our federal government to account for accepting a questionable environmental assessment of the Bay du Nord project. Climate change was not given the critical consideration needed.
We are holding our federal government to account for jeopardizing the marine ecosystem and international fishing grounds off Canada’s eastern shores. This is one of the most important marine environments in the world and Equinor has clearly stated it will take 18 - 36 days to cap a blowout that deep in the ocean.
We, as residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, stand in solidarity with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people here and across Canada in the fight for the cancellation of the Bay du Nord project.
